Adapting to Changing Customs Regulations in International Trade

Changing customs regulations are creating new complexities for global trade daily. From heightened scrutiny of de minimis shipments to shifting tariff structures and evolving documentation requirements, importers must stay vigilant to avoid costly compliance issues.

At Everglory Logistics, we help clients navigate these changes with expert insights and proactive strategies, as highlighted in our coverage of the 90-day tariff reduction, April 2025 Tariff Update, and Section 232 Tariffs.

Recent Regulatory Shifts:

  • De Minimis Rule Under Scrutiny: U.S. Customs and Border Protection is tightening oversight of de minimis ($800 threshold) shipments, especially for e-commerce goods from China. Misclassification and undervaluation can trigger fines and seizures.

  • Ongoing Tariff Updates: Section 232, Section 301, and reciprocal tariffs remain in flux. Importers must monitor applicable HTS codes and understand tariff liability.

  • Increased Documentation Enforcement: Customs authorities demand more accurate, verifiable data, including country of origin declarations and proper classification.

Customs Compliance Strategies:

To adapt to changing customs regulations and stay compliant:

  • Audit regularly: Conduct frequent audits of product classification, valuation, and documentation to catch errors before Customs does.

  • Understand de minimis limits: Work with your logistics provider to ensure proper valuation and eligibility for de minimis exemptions — and avoid misdeclaration.

  • Stay current: Monitor regulatory changes through trusted sources and update internal procedures promptly.

  • Leverage technology: Use trade compliance software and data tools to improve accuracy and visibility.

  • Partner with experts: Collaborate with Everglory Logistics to ensure your shipments align with current customs requirements and to gain strategic guidance as policies evolve.
